The Oversight and Government Reform Committee released a report on May 9, 2012 detailing wasteful spending by the TSA. (Report: Airport Insecurity: TSA’s Failure to Cost-Effectively Procure, Deploy and Warehouse its Screening Technologies).
According to estimates by TSA officials, there are 5,700 pieces of equipment valued at $184 million sitting in storage. As of Februrary 2012, 85% of the equipment has been in storage for at least six months. 30% has been in storage for at least 1 year. The TSA is paying more than $3.5 million per year just to store this equipment while the equipment has depreciated by $23 million.
